This article looks at the variation between air and ground temperature for 500 sols (Martian days) at MSL Curiosity from landing to Sol 570 on March 14, 2014. For the missing days there was no data reported. The initial assumption was that with the thin atmosphere generally accepted (before our research began) the daytime rate of heat loss between the ground and the mast at a height of 1.5 meters above ground level would be fairly consistent with little variation. Likewise the ground would cool faster than the air at night and this would also be consistent. It was hypothesized that a large amount of variation especially at night would suggest a more complex atmosphere with a higher density than what NASA claims. In fact, as Table 1, its supporting graphs and data show, during the days there was a standard deviation of 5.63 °C (about 13.05 °F) in general heating of the ground as attention shifted from the mast to the ground where it was about 12 °C warmer, and during the night there was a standard deviation of about 9.1949 °C (16.55 °F) in general cooling (with notable exceptions at sols 34,123,192,215, 310, 466, 486, 489, 501, 513, and 537) as attention shifted from the mast to the ground where it was about 7.774 °C cooler. However, the ground temperatures are not very precise. Ground temperature were supposed to be recorded with a thermopile on Boom 1 (which suffered some damage on landing). Assuming that Guy Webster (JPL P.R.) was correct when he told me that only the wind sensor was damaged on Boom 1, the ground temperature sensor was supposed to view the Martian surface to the side of the rover through a filter with a passband of 8 to 14 microns. The requirement was to measure ground brightness temperature over the range from 150 to 300 K with a resolution of 2 K and an accuracy of 10 K. REMS has made a number of changes to ground temperatures they post since they began doing so in 2013.

Figure 1 above is based on REMS data published before April, 2014. Table 2 shows data that has been revised since then, so the graph will change slightly. Figure 2 below is based on Table 3 where further revisions (on going) by the REMS Team may not yet be shown).


CHANGE IN TEMPERATURE DURING DAYLIGHT AT MARS SCIENCE LABORATORY BETWEEN AIR AT 1.5 METERS ABOVE GROUND LEVEL AT THE GROUND. We have caught the REMS Team/JPL changing this data on many occassions. The snapshot on Table 2 was taken on April 8, 2014 - about a month after the data for the night differences were put onto the Table 3 below it. Column D shows some the major maximum air temperature revisions caught. Previous high pressures were consistently revised downward or cut altogether on the new Table 2. Thus Sol 370 had its pressure of 1149 Pa reduced  to 865 (the value for sols 369 and 371), while Sol 192 had its presssure  of 940 cut altogether. Also cut were Sol 200 (pressure 937 Pa), and Sol 262 (pressure 900 Pa). Sol 462 with a pressure of 877 Pa was also apparently cut because the pressure was expected to be between 905 and 906 Pa. REMS/JPL seemed determined to keep pressures on the expected curve. Divergent pressures were simply not tolerated, especially after we pointed out these pressures to JPL public relations man Guy Webster.

       The salmon color on the Table 2 denotes temperatures at or above the freezing point of water. The ground temperature sensor was only designed to have a resolution of 2 K and an accuracy of 10 K. When the daytime increase in temperature from the mast (air temperature 1.5 meters above ground level) to the ground was twice that (20 K/20°C) or more we used a light blue color to highlight it.
