Comparison of Ultraviolet Radiation at Gale Crater, Mars for MSL Years 1, 2 and 3. This page underwent major revisions on 2/23/2016 after the REMS Team/JPL tossed out all low UV data. However, on October 1, 2017 we discovered that al least for Sols 619, 838, 840, 841, 843, 844, 850, 851, 853, 854, 855, and 1026 JPL changed the UV values back to low. Previously our article had been read by NASA, Spanish Space Agency, REMS Team supervisors in Spain, and the Kremlin. Latest update: 6/14/2018.

15. ULTRAVIOLET RADIATION AND CLOUD COVER AT MSL.

Before looking at the REMS (Rover Environmental Monitoring Station)/NASA ultraviolet radiation data, it's important to understand that the criticism we offer here is unlike that found anywhere else because we have had an impact on the NASA data. NASA publishes their MSL data, we analyze it, and look for data off the (politically) expected curve. We then publish our color-coded spreadsheets complete with print screens of the odds NASA data, and wait for NASA to change the figures on their side. Almost always they do, although with respect to pressure, what they change is, we believe, still wrong by two orders of magnitude. When NASA alters its data we again capture it by print-screen and we publish it to prove that NASA takes its cues for what they can get away with from us. For purposes of clarity the spreadsheets and print-secreens are the work of Barry Roffman. Questions about them or suggested corrections should be sent to Barrysroffman@gmail.com. By corrections that are politically driven we mean that if pressures are varying on a steady downward trend from 750 to 715 Pascals, the sudden insertion of pressures that are over 1,167 Pascals are out of place. This is especially true when 1,167 Pa reading is on the exact sol (2002) that a month earlier we had predicted would see the minimum annual pressure.  Since their obvious error was on the day we predicted and since they corrected it after we mocked it (see http://davidaroffman.com/images/merged_2.png) it appears that there are people at NASA who like to play games with Mars weather data.

Where can you find our data with included printscreens? Here:

Their Year 1 is our Year 2, their Year 2 is our Year 3, etc.

Now, let's look at what NASA had published and revised for the first two Martian years of MSL operation and update it with what they currenly offer after three Martian years.  The next two tables show what we found after two Martian years there. A Martian has 669 sols (Martian days) with each about 37 minutes longer than an Earth day.

TABLE 23B

Table 23B shows µv for 1,256 MSL sols. This chart was prepared before we double checked medium and high µv values. The check was necessary because medium and high µv values were only distinguished with a slight color difference unless the µv icon was clicked (see Figure 24). Table 23C with the red background is what remains after the REMS Team eliminated all low µv values. We believe that its credibility is highly suspect.

Table 23D Initial ultraviolet radiation reported through 2,007 sols at MSL.

Our initial exact count of medium and high µv values might have been slightly off because the REMS reports relied primarily on a color code to denote µv level, and the colors they chose for medium and high values were almost identical. We noted on 2/22/2016 that after a visit to our sites by the Fininish Meteorological Institute which, working for the REMS Team and NASA bears responsibility for all MSL weather instruments, all 19 low µv values were altered to N/A or medium. All low µv values after 2/22//2016 were also altered.  There were new low µv values posted by the REMS Team for Sols 1,610 and 1,611. We noted them on at http://marscorrect.com/photo4_19.html and have a print-screen of Sol 1,610 at http://marscorrect.com/images/sol_1610_error_fixed.png. Within three days of posting the low values JPL again altered them both (to Not Available). Evidently  low pressure is not politically correct.

The µv results shown on Tables 23B through 23D were a bit surprising. If we use a number of 5 to represent a µv index of extremely high, 4 for very high, 3 for high, 2 for medium, and 1 for low, then (ignoring 111 sols where there was no data on Table 23D, the average µv index was only about 2.8349 – between medium and high. This is suprisingly low because NASA often cites what sounds like extremely high radiation (due to its allegedly thin atmosphere, lack of an atmospheric ozone layer and lack of a magnetic field) as reason why it is so difficult for life to survive on the surface of Mars, however there are other types of radiation - not included on the REMS weather reports - that are supposedly measured by MSL Curiosity. In addition to identifying neutrons, gamma rays, protons, and alpha particles (subatomic fragments consisting of 2 protons and 2 neutrons, identical to helium nuclei, the Radiation Assessment Detector (RAD) RAD identifies heavy ions up to iron on the periodic table.

While Viking 1, Viking 2 and MSL high pressure air measurements were close to perihelion (closest approach to the sun) as shown on Table 2 in Annex U (http://marscorrect.com/ANNEX%20U.pdf) of this report, the relationship of perihelion to UV was far less certain. Table 2 there details what the current JPL position is with respect to each sol’s Solar Longitude (Ls), pressure, and reported UV value. Before their major revision there were 4 categories given by JPL/the REMS team) for µv values found – low, moderate, high and very high. The revision only included moderate, high and very high. With respect to very high µv it was recorded on 175 sols in MSL Year 1, but only on 17 sols in MSL Year 2. In Year 3 so far (sols 1,339 to 1,844, there were 13 such sols in the spring, and 42 sols with very high µv for the summer.

When I did a data check on 2/22/2016 I wasn’t surprised to find that I had made the wrong color judgment for about 10 sols, and the corrections were immediately made on my website spreadsheet for µv reports at http://marscorrect.com/photo2_17.html. However, I was shocked to find that after I went to a great deal of trouble to graphically illustrate exactly where Mars was in its orbit around the sun when low µv was reported, all 19 incidents had been removed by the REMS Team and NASA. We believe that this action is another response to critiques seen throughout our websites. Figure 75 in our Basic Report shows print-screen records of several low µv values before they were tossed out of what was presented to the public after all such data was massacred. But while we thought we had summed up in the µv situation with Figure 75, again REMS shocked us reading our Report and restored at least 12 low µv values by October, 2017. The restored data is captured on Figures 1 and 2 below. Without these 12 restored values there were only 6 lows UV sols that survived for 2,007 sols of the first 3 Martian years of MSL.

Why are low µv values problematic for NASA? One might think that with the ultra-thin atmosphere espoused by them, and no ozone layer, ultraviolet radiation on Mars would be extremely high on at least some days. But at least up to Sol 2066 on June 10, 2018 it never was, even though the REMS Team alleged that every single day at MSL so far has been “sunny.” However, this claim by the REMS Team is easily refuted with data provided by the Malin Space Science Systems.

Why is the REMS Team indecisive about the idea of low µv values? Quite simply, 19 sols with low µv does not fit well with an atmosphere <1 % of Earth’s, no ozone layer, and clear sky. That NASA threw out all low µv values after they read our concerns makes their action all the more suspect, especially because they have thrown out all wind reports after our objections, changed their totally wrong sunrise and sunset times to match David Roffman’s calculations, and we document many changes made to their temperature and pressure data after we color- highlighted obvious concerns on our weather spreadsheets for MSL Years 1, 2, and 3 (see Table 23A above for links to all our data). Now again, after we recorded our observation of them removing low µv values, we record them read them reading our critique again and restoring most of these values. Eight years ago (now) Dr. David Roffman set out to understand Martian weather. At my sugestion, he wrote a simple 10-page paper (Case for Higher Than Advertised Martian Air Pressure – see http://davidaroffman.com/rich_text_6.html) for a technical writing course at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. That 10-page paper grew into this 1,030+/- page full Report (including our Annexes and Appendices). Indeed, with NASA and foreign space agencies constantly at our web sites reading the latest edition of this Report we can state that this Report is becoming a controlling factor in what NASA tells the world about Mars and in what the world believes about NASA’s credibility on this topic. As such, we never took down our graphics about the original low µv values posted by the REMS Team. We are right. NASA is wrong. They know it, and thus as Figures 1, 2 and 6 show, even on this they caved in to us and restored most of the low µv values.

Figures 3A through 3F show relative positions of Mars and Earth when Low Ultraviolet radiations was originally reported by REMS on Mars.

Using an interactive 3D Diagram of the Solar System available at https://in-the-sky.org/solarsystem.php,  at first look it appeared that, as is shown in Figures 3A to 3F, it did not appear that there is a correlation between UV and the relative positions of Mars and Earth in their orbits around the sun (at least with respect to when Gale Crater, Mars was experiencing low UV).

In the first 1031 sols that MSL was on Mars there were only 19 sols where the UV at MSL was categorized as low. All days were sunny there. For comparison purposes (without checking on sky cover) we looked at Las Vegas, Nevada for the same on the first 15 of these dates (by June 25, 2015 UV was at the extreme level in Las Vegas, detials for the full month of June wil be checked later). Eleven of the first 15 days showed low UV readings there too, one was moderate, one was high and two were very high.  As for the low readings in Las Vegas, it appears the general trend there is for low UV in the winter and high or very high UV in the summer (see Figure 7). Las Vegas was chosen for comparison purposes because it is found in a desert environment where most days are sunny. On average there are 210 sunny days each year (cloud cover 30% or less), and 82 partly sunny days with cloud cover between 40% and 70%, and 73 days that are cloudy. Given findings of relative humidity that is higher than expected at Gale Crater, and brine underground, it seems odd that not one day at MSL has been cloudy. Clouds can be seen drifting by behind the Telltale wind device on Phoenix on its Sol 103 here, but Phoenix landed in the Martian arctic. Stratus clouds were seen 16 km above the Mars Pathfinder - see Figure 4. It landed at 19.1 degrees North (which like MSL Curiosity is in the tropics).

Figure 4 - Stratus clouds seen 1 hours 40 minutes before sunrise at Mars Pathfinder. If the atmosphere there is as thin as NASA claims it is doubtful that there would be light so far before sunrise.

CLOUDS DO FORM AT LATITUDES SIMILAR TO THAT OF MSL CURIOSITY. So it is curious that no cloudy days have been seen on REMS reports for the first 1,215 sols at MSL. However a search on line reveals that clouds have been seen at MSL.

The paper to read is Atmospheric movies acquired at the Mars Science Laboratory landing site: Cloud morphology, frequency and significance to the Gale Crater water cycle and Phoenix mission results by John E. Moore et al. (2015). The abstract states that, "We report on the first 360 sols (LS 150° to 5°), representing just over half a Martian year, of atmospheric monitoring movies acquired using the NavCam imager from the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) Rover Curiosity. Such movies reveal faint clouds that are difficult to discern in single images. The data set acquired was divided into two different classifications depending upon the orientation and intent of the observation. Up to sol 360, 73 Zenith movies and 79 Supra-Horizon movies have been acquired and time-variable features could be discerned in 25 of each. The data set from MSL is compared to similar observations made by the Surface Stereo Imager (SSI) onboard the Phoenix Lander and suggests a much drier environment at Gale Crater (4.6°S) during this season than was observed in Green Valley (68.2°N) as would be expected based on latitude and the global water cycle. The optical depth of the variable component of clouds seen in images with features are up to 0.047 ± 0.009 with a granularity to the features observed which averages 3.8°. MCS also observes clouds during the same period of comparable optical depth at 30 and 50 km that would suggest a cloud spacing of 2.0 to 3.3 km. Multiple motions visible in atmospheric movies support the presence of two distinct layers of clouds. At Gale Crater, these clouds are likely caused by atmospheric waves given the regular spacing of features observed in many Zenith movies and decreased spacing towards the horizon in sunset movies consistent with clouds forming at a constant elevation. Reanalysis of Phoenix data in the light of the NavCam equatorial dataset suggests that clouds may have been more frequent in the earlier portion of the Phoenix mission than was previously thought."

CLOUDS AT MER OPPORTUNITY.

http://mars.nasa.gov/mer/spotlight/20080324_Opportunity.html

These clouds were seen at MER Opportunity. It landed at 1.9462°S 354.4734°E[6] The MSL curiosity landed at a latitude of 4.59 degrees South. The approximate difference in latitude  (4.59-1.95) is only 2.64 degrees. As each one degree difference of latitude in Mars is about 59 km, these clouds, though not at the longitude of MSL, were only 155.76 km (96.7847769 miles) north of Curiosity's latitude.

This video animation shows wispy clouds in the sky moving slowly toward the viewer.

Figure 6 - Distribution of very high and low µv values at MSL as related to solar longitude as Mars orbits the sun. All low µv values were removded by the REMS Team or JPL in 2016, but those shown above were reinserted by them in 2017.

LS FOR SOLS AT MSL WITH VERY HIGH AND LOW ULTRAVIOLET RADIATION. In the first 1,254 sols of MSL operations at Gale Crater, Mars, there were 191 sols with Very High UV. The range in solar longitude (Ls) for UV ratings was between 155 and 347, with the average Ls 251 degrees. Of interest, the Ls at perihelion, when Mars is closest to the sun, is also 251 degrees. Thus it appears that if the data is trustworthy, UV is highest at MSL Curiosity (in the southern hemisphere) when Curiosity is closest to the sun. The season in the southern hemisphere when high UV was recorded was from spring to summer. Ls 251 is late spring. However, it does not follow that lowest UV is when Mars is at aphelion (further from the sun) at Ls 71 although it was reported for Ls 83 and 84. Low UV was originally found on 15 sols (actually on 4 more sols, but JPL revised the data) between Ls 119 and 317 and one at Ls 3 but the fact that Low UV was claimed for all four seasons (winter - Ls 119), spring (intermittently from Ls 249 to 263), summer (intermittently from Ls 317 to 354), and fall (intermittently from Ls 3 to 84) before the REMS Team/JPL throughout all low UV values. However, before they took this action it did not appear that LS was a critical factor.

UV VARIATION ON EARTH. Figure 7 shows how UV varies in the United States month. With respect to Earth's perihelion (closest approach to the sun), it occurs near January 4th, in the dead of winter in the northern hemisphere. The highest UV in the continental United States is in South Florida where the mean is UV is between 4 and 5. Across most of the U.S. at the latitude of San Francisco it's down to 1 to 2 except in the Rocky Mountains where the air is thinner and the mean UV value is about 2 to 3. Clearly the U.S. does not see maximum UV at perihelion. Rather it sees maximum UV values around July 4th when Earth is at aphelion. Mean UV values in South Florida are around 8 to 9 then, and in Colorado in the Rocky Mountains it hits 12 the top of the scale. Again, Earth is farthest from the sun then. High to very high UV values are seen as far north as Idaho and Wyoming with Earth so far from the sun. However it should be noted that when Earth is at perihelion in January it is 147.5 million km from the sun, whereas when it is at aphelion in July it is 152.6 million km from the sun. The difference is only 5.1 million km (about 3.875 million miles). When Mars is at perihelion it is 206.7 million km from the sun, whereas at aphelion it is 249.2 million km from it, a difference of 42.5 million km (26.5625 million miles).
